1 “PARTICIPATORY ART” December 2012

2 Role of artists and participants in the production of making art FOUR TYPES OR DEGREES OF PARTICIPATION (1) Nominal: an individual viewer contemplates a particular work of art in a gallery, museum, or other venue. The viewer still interacts with the artwork (intellectually and /or emotionally if it is successful). She is just not expected to “do” anything. (2) Directed: a visitor completes a simple task to contribute to the creation of a work of art. Again, the work can be considered interactive but not necessarily collaborative because the work of art is determined by the artist. (3) Creative: the visitor “provides content for a component of the work within a structure provided by the artist.” In this case, the artist seems to give up some control of the artwork by inviting the public to collaborate but is still largely under her conditions. (4) Collaborative: The visitor shares responsibility for developing the structure and content of the workin collaboration and direct dialogue with the artist.” If structure and content are relinquished by the artist does this mean the artist abandons “all” control? — Pablo Helguera
