They expected to find jobs, political and religious freedom, and even some adventure.

Government officials asked questions about where they were from, the work they did, and where they planned to live. -Immigrants often spent an entire day in long lines at Ellis Island. -Once the examinations were over, the immigrants took a ferry back to New York City to begin their lives.
