10/23-10/24 Notes pages 185-189 (Chunking) 1) p.185 Why did immigrants come to the U.S.? -Came hoping for opportunities to make better lives for themselves and their families. - many were escaping poverty, hunger, or lack of jobs. -farms and factories offered the hope of income, food, and work - Some were escaping violence, war, or injustice. - Jewish immigrants left Europe to escape mistreatment because of their religion. - Most didn't expect to find easy riches. They expected to find jobs, political and religious freedom, and even some adventure.

10/23-10/24 Notes pages 185-189 (Chunking), Con't 2) p.186 Ellis Island -Most ships carrying immigrants from Europe landed in New York City. -Most were taken by ferry to Ellis Island- an immigration station -an immigration station is a place immigrants go before getting permission to enter the United states. - Doctors checked for dangerous diseases. Government officials asked questions about where they were from, the work they did, and where they planned to live. -Immigrants often spent an entire day in long lines at Ellis Island. -Once the examinations were over, the immigrants took a ferry back to New York City to begin their lives.

10/23-10/24 Notes Pages 185-189 (Chunking), con’t 4) p.188-189 New World -Upon arrival in the United States, immigrants needed to 1. find a place to live 2. find a job -Immigrants who did not have family in the U.S. moved to neighborhoods where there were people from their homeland. -Living in a community where the language and traditions were familiar made it easier to adjust. -Many immigrants worked in factories, mines, and railroads. -Some immigrants opened their own stores or sold goods from pushcarts -pushcarts are carts set up on the street -Many immigrants faced prejudices (unfair negative opinions) -couldn’t even apply to some jobs. -Discussion: Why do you think some immigrants faced prejudice in the U.S.?
