Reading and Math Tests Fall 2013

Reading MAP Test Mon Sept 23: 8 th Grade Tues Sept 24: 7 th Grade Wed Sept 25: 6 th Grade Math MAP Test Thur Sept 26: 7 th Grade Fri Sept 27: 8th Grade Mon Sept 30: 6 th Grade

 Students will be called down to the testing center, which is in the library, sometime throughout the day. Testing is not necessarily done alphabetically.  You will receive a testing pass, which basically looks like your schedule.  When you receive your testing pass, put all your belongings in your locker and report to the testing center.

 The testing center is located in the library. However, DO NOT USE THE MAIN LIBRARY ENTRANCE!! It will be closed!  Students will enter the testing center through the back of the library, which is across from Room 603 and 604. Look for signs pointing you in the right direction!  Once you arrive to the testing center, an adult will let you know what you will need to do next.

 When you arrive to the testing center, you may be asked to wait for a few minutes until a computer becomes available.  When you enter the testing center, you need to be quiet and respectful to the other students already testing.  Once you are directed to a computer, you will need to log yourself on to begin your test.

 Enter your EDUID# (not your student ID#) or your last name to log on.  A list of names will appear. Click on your name and then click “next.” Your name should then appear in a large box on the screen.  BE SURE TO CHECK THAT YOUR NAME APPEARS! If another name appears, raise your hand and wait for a proctor to help you!  If your name is in the box, click “Start Test.”

 You will have enough time to read and answer all the questions.  Be sure to read the directions to each item first, then the problem, and finally, read ALL of the answer choices.  Use your best test-taking skills if you don’t know an answer to a question.

 Both the reading and the math tests are designed to show us not only what you DO know, but also what you struggle with and DON’T know.  Questions will become more and more difficult and are designed so that you are only able to answer half of them correctly!  Therefore, try not to become discouraged when the questions become difficult. Just do the best you can!

 Each test should take about an hour to complete.  Tests are not timed and you will be given the amount of time you need to complete each test.  Take both tests seriously! You may be placed in a reading lab or math lab based on your performance.

 There are many ways to choose your answer: ◦ Use your mouse and click the item ◦ Type in the number and hit enter ◦ Use your arrow keys and hit enter

 There are two ways to move on to the next question: ◦ Use your mouse to click on the “Go On” button. ◦ Press the “Enter” key on the keyboard.

 You may click on as many answers to a question as you like, but once you click “Go On” or press “Enter,” you are finished with that question.  Your answer is locked and you cannot go back to a previous question!!!  You cannot skip questions.

 When you come to the end of the test, your score will be displayed.  DO NOT press any keys or click any buttons once this happens.  Please raise your hand and the proctor will come to you.

 If you have any questions or concerns during your test, please raise your hand and a proctor will come to you.  We are not allowed to provide you with any additional information during the test.  We cannot help you with the meaning of any words.

 Students will first take the Reading MAP test.  There are 42 questions on the reading test.  Some reading passages may be too long to fit on to the screen at the same time.  In this case, use the scroll bar on the right-hand side of the screen to scroll down so that the whole passage and matching question are displayed.

 You may see the same passage repeated with different questions. This is okay.  This probably will not ever happen, but should you come across a question that appears to be missing answers, questions, or instructions, raise your hand so we can help you.

 The second test you will take is the math test.  There are 52 questions on this test.  You will be provided with scratch paper and a pencil. Raise your hand if you need additional paper.  If you are unsure about a word in a math question, raise your hand and an adult can pronounce the word for you. We cannot tell you what the word means and we cannot explain any symbols.

 For some questions, a calculator will appear on the screen. You may use the calculator, but you are not required to do so.  When the calculator pops us, it is not a HINT to use it. It’s simply there if you want to use it.  If you want to remove it from your screen, click the “Hide Calculator” button at the bottom of the screen.  If the calculator is not there, it means you’re not allowed to use it.

 PERSEVERANCE ◦ Keep working throughout each test, even if you are discouraged. ◦ Don’t give up, even when the questions are difficult!

 RESPONSIBILITY ◦ Respect school property, particularly the computers. ◦ Follow all directions and requests made by adults. ◦ Use your manners at all times.

 INTEGRITY ◦ Respect others while testing by remaining quiet and keeping to yourself. ◦ Be accountable for your actions and do what’s right. ◦ Do your own work.

 DETE RMINATION ◦ Finish it ~ even if it’s hard! ◦ Enter the testing center with a positive, can-do attitude each and every time!

 EXCELLE NCE ◦ Do your very best at all times. ◦ Be a positive role model for your peers!
