Size and Summary of Collection Rocks, Minerals, and Soils 3 rd grade In our collection of approximately 50 titles pertaining to this topic, over half of the items are from before 1990. Our books from the 1970’s and 1980’s appear to be in good condition, but they are boring and lack the multicultural aspect that many books now have. The videos in our collection are those that came with our textbooks. Rocks and minerals kits are missing pieces. Furthermore, the titles in our collection are geared toward 3 rd -5 th grade students. None of these titles have been checked out more than two times in the past year. In our collection of approximately 50 titles pertaining to this topic, over half of the items are from before 1990. I chose the topic of Rocks, Minerals, and Soils for 3 rd grade because this is the grade that I teach, and materials are quite limited in this area. While we can read about rocks, soils, and minerals in our science textbook, this is an area that students need to be able to see, feel, and experiment with various visuals and manipulatives. When I approached my colleagues, they agreed that we are lacking in materials that can help us teach about rocks, minerals, and soils effectively. I have developed several in-depth slideshows in an attempt to make this topic more interesting for my students because the books that are available in our media center are dated and dull. My colleagues and I feel that there is a need to add fiction titles, picture books, and eBooks in this content area.
