18 Know/Do/Strategy Work with those in your discipline to complete the other column(s) on the answer sheet…

19 What strategies did you use throughout the test? How do we communicate these same strategies to our students?

According to the ACT site, a benchmark of 22 on the mathematics section, a 24 on the science section means a student has approximately a 50% chance of earning a B or better and 75% chance of earning a C or better in an equivalent college course. www.act.org 41

There is no “quick fix” So, think crock pot, not microwave 42

43

 Math questions are arranged in order of difficulty  Reading passages require reading strategies for faster paced reading  Science information can’t be read in it’s entirety. Working backwards for necessary information is required for completion of the test. 44

Don’t forget to mark—in the test booklet—the questions you skip 45

There is no penalty for guessing and no penalty for wrong answers! Therefore, guess when all else fails and guess consistently! 46

 Scan the problem first  You may not need all the information 47

 Numerical answers are arranged in order. So, start in the middle when substituting.  This is extremely time consuming! 48

49 Once you’ve determined the answer, pick it…even if you’re not finished working it all the way through. NO NEED TO SHOW ALL WORK!

50 USE FIGURES WISELY! An arc on an angle doesn’t necessarily mean it’s congruent to another angle with an arc. ***Math

51 Eliminate obviously wrong answers Or Eliminate any odd ball answers…if three are the same and two different, get rid of the two NARROW YOUR ANSWERS

There is no penalty for guessing and no penalty for wrong answers! Therefore, guess when all else fails and guess consistently! 52

53 DRAW A PICTURE IF APPROPRIATE ***Math

54 USE WHATEVER METHOD IS FASTEST AND EASIEST FOR YOU, EVEN IF IT’S ONE YOUR TEACHER DIDN’T USE Your Method…

55 Be sure to answer both parts Caution… The first answer is likely one of the wrong answers given TWO PART QUESTIONS ***Math

56 DON ’ T FORGET … TAKE YOUR CALCULATOR TAKE EXTRA BATTERIES ***Math

57

Get a good night’s sleep!

Eat a good breakfast!

Take a shower the morning of the test…

Wear a watch…

Answer 10 problems, then bubble 10. Answer 10 more problems, then bubble 10 more problems…and so on.

63

64

65

How do successful problem solvers work? 66

 Use ACT items from the ACT site and The Real ACT Prep Guide on each unit assessment  Label the section ACT Style Questions  Teacher and student monitor progress on each question 67

 Integrate more algebra in geometry  Integrate more science examples while teaching probability and statistics  Science incorporate data interpretation in all units  Integrate more data interpretation in vocational classes, including ag., business, and family/consumer sciences 68

Remember, crock pot, not microwave! 69

70

71 There is a new website with a question for each day of the school year. So far, this has only been created for math. The site is: http://sbstjohn.com/QODWebSite/act_qod.htm http://sbstjohn.com/QODWebSite/act_qod.htm

In math it’s not about the answer to the question, rather the process! In science, it’s about “real” practice on data interpretation! 72

 Answer isn’t part of discussion  Focus is on the process only  This isn’t easy for students or teachers  10 minutes or less  Department/school “buy in”  Main strategy and used consistently 73
