Bean Bags By Mrs. Steiner MP3

1. Underline Key Information Lima beans come in 3-pound and 5-pound bags which cost $1.15 and $1.63 respectively. How many of each should you buy to have at least 17 pounds of lima beans at the lowest cost? Respectively: In that order

2. Choose a strategy Make a Chart Use Guess and Check to fill in the chart Find a Pattern Make a Table Work Backwards Guess and Check Draw a Picture Make a List Write a Number Sentence Use Logical Reasoning

3. Show your strategy 3 pound bags 5 pound bags Total Weight at least 17 Total PriceLowest Price? 60(3 x 6) + (5 x 0)= 18 $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + 1.15= $6.90 13(3 x 1) + (5 x3)= 18 $1.15 + $1.63 + $1.63 + $1.63 = $6.04 32(3 x 3) + (5 x2)= 19 $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.63 + $1.63 = $6.71 41(3 x 4) + (5 x 1)= 17 $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.63= $6.23 04(3 x 0) + (5 x 4)= 20 $1.63 + $1.63 + $1.63 + $1.63 = $6.52 70(3 x 7) + (5 x 0)= 21 $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + $1.15 + 1.15 + 1.15= $8.05 05(3 x 0) + (5 x 5)= 25 $1.63 + $1.63 + $1.63 + $1.63 + $1.63 = $8.15

4. Explain Your Work (Communication) 3 pound bags 5 pound bags Total Weight at least 17 Total PriceLowest Price? 13(3 x 1) + (5 x3)= 18 $1.15 + $1.63 + $1.63 + $1.63 = $6.04 Yes 1.I knew that the total pounds had to add up to at least 17, so for each combination I tried, I used the number model (3 x Bags) + (5 x Bags) >= 17 2.To figure the price for each combination, I added $1.15 for each 3 pound bag and $1.63 for each 5 lb bag. 3.To come up with combinations, I started with using all 3 pound bags whose total weight was at least 17 pounds. After that, I started taking out 3 pound bags and adding in 5 pound bags so that the weight was at least 17 pounds. 4.I used 4 other combinations of bags. I found that the combination of 1 3- pound and 3 5-pound bags was the cheapest way to get at least 17 pounds of beans.

5. The Last Step It’s easy to forget the last step: Put the solution in the solution box. Label it clearly! Solution (Clearly write your solution using labels or units, if necessary) 1 3-pound bag and 3 5-pound bags
