Why Isn’t Water Always Enough? What does our body really need?

Big Idea: Water is important on Earth, but it is even more important in your body! WARM-UP: Answer on page 33 of your notebook ! What does the average person’s body need to carry out all of it’s normal everyday functions? What does an athlete’s body need to function at a higher performing level?

Every cell in our body is about 2/3 water…water that we need to survive. What happens as we start to lose some of this water?

Dehydration Excessive loss of the body’s water.

Dehydration What really happens when we sweat? What has been lost that our body needs?

Dehydration Does water meet all of our needs to replenish what has been lost? What do sports drinks like Gatorade have to offer that water does not?

Electrolytes As for your body, the major electrolytes are as follows: sodium (Na + ) potassium (K + ) chloride (Cl - ) calcium (Ca 2+ ) magnesium (Mg 2+ ) bicarbonate (HCO 3 - ) phosphate (PO 4 2- ) sulfate (SO 4 2- ) Compounds in the blood that conduct electricity, and are essential for health.

Classwork: “Save the World One Sip at a Time” If you were a doctor with the World Health Organization and you knew that Poor Man’s Gatorade was a life saving solution to dehydration how would you get the whole world on board to help? OPTIONS: - Create a one page advertisement that you would give to inform and influence others to help this global problem - - Create a proposal/plan that you would like the government to follow in order to help other countries overcome this global problem
