3 Flowchart Symbols Flowcharting CIM Control Systems Start/end Process
It is important to use standard symbols to communicate the intended process clearly and efficiently. Arrows Decision Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2008

4 example Count from 1 to 10 by the odd numbers START END Start at 1
NO YES Is number >10? START Start at 1 ADD 2 DISPLAY NUMBER Count from 1 to 10 by the odd numbers The flowchart begins by displaying the number 1. The flowchart adds 2 to the display number. The sum is then compared to 10. If the sum is less than 10, then the flow returns to the display and addition functions. When the sum is 10 or more, then the flowchart ends.

6 Flowcharting CIM Control Systems Your Turn Create a flowchart describing the process that you follow each morning from the time you wake up for school until the time you arrive at the school entrance. You must use the appropriate symbols. The process must contain at least two decisions. The process must contain at least 10 blocks total plus a starting and ending block. This is meant to be a fun activity for the students to consider decisions made each morning (e.g., deciding whether to press the snooze button multiple times, what to eat for breakfast, whether to watch television, etc.). Determine a format that students will use to share their flowchart (e.g., submit a paper copy, present to the class, share with a partner, etc.). Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2008
