Why People Work Achievement – supporting yourself!!!! Feel proud and competent Fulfillment – gain satisfaction from doing a job well and from contributing to society. Personal growth – helps you to develop skills and gain knowledge Sense of belonging – build satisfying relationships with people and enjoy being part of a team. Approval – performing a job well boosts self-esteem.

The impact of Career Decisions
Job – specific position at a specific employer Career – series of related jobs in a particular field Many people change careers in their lifetimes. Many do because they want to do something different or because of economic climate changes Career Path – steps you take to reach your career goal

How much you earn Where you live and work Your schedule and free time What are the advantages and disadvantages of a job that requires extensive travel ?

Public and Private Sectors
Public – funded by tax dollars Private – part of the economy that is not controlled by the government Give three examples of public and private sector employees.

Types of Businesses Individual proprietorships – owned and controlled by one person. Partnerships – controlled by two or more people Corporations – owners are called shareholders What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of business?

Types of Employment Full time – usually 40 hours a week, benefits
Part time – under 40 hours a week, no benefits Contract – work for a specific project for a specific amount of time, when it’s over you work somewhere else. Temporary – help out during busy time or to fill in for vacationing employees Freelance – self-employed and work for a number of different clients

Entrepreneurship Entrepreneur – someone who sets up and operates a business What are the advantages and disadvantages to being an entrepreneur?

Economic Factors By the early 1900’s the economy shifted from agriculture to factory. Today America is primarily a service economy. Global Economy – way national economies are linked by trade. Downsizing – laying employees off to reduce costs Outsourcing – contracting services to an outside company
