Presentation on theme: "Qualitative and Quantitative Properties of Matter"— Presentation transcript:

1 Qualitative and Quantitative Properties of Matter

2 Qualitative VS. Quantitative
Qualitative: A characteristic of a substance that can be observed and described in words that does not use numerical value. Ex. Small, heavy, grey, smooth Quantitative: A characteristic of matter that can be measured and described with numerical value. Ex. 37°C, 25 lbs, 355mL, 3cm³

3 Qualitative Properties

4 More Qualitative Properties of Matter
Quickly scan p. 109 in your textbook. They determine how matter can be used. Why is it important to know these properties of matter?

5 Quantitative Properties
Temperature: Temperature measures how hot or cold matter is.

6 States of Matter and Temperature
What do we already know?

7 States of Matter and Temperature
Melting Point – The characteristic temperature at which a materials melts (goes from ____ to ____) The melting point for water is ___ °C. Freezing Point – The characteristic temperature at which a material freezes (goes from ____ to ____) The freezing point for water is ___ °C. Boiling Point – The characteristic temperature at which a material boils (goes from ____ to ____) The boiling point for water is ___ °C.

8 How else can we measure matter?
Remember, all matter has two things in common: Mass and Volume

9 Mass describes the amount of matter that makes up an object.

10 What are some of the units of measurement we use to measure mass?

11 Volume: Volume describes the amount of space that an object takes up. V = l x w x h h = height w = width l = length

12 What are some of the units of measurement we use to measure volume?

13 How do we measure the volume of uniquely shaped object?
Eureka!

14 Water Displacement Theory

15 Measuring Matter _____________________ properties are properties that you can measure and describe using numerical values. Qualitative Numerical Newton’s Quantitative

16 Measuring Matter __________________ describes the amount of matter that makes up an object. Volume Mass Weight Density

17 Measuring Matter ___________________ describes the amount of space that an object takes up. Volume Mass Weight Density
