http://fms-itskills.ncl.ac.uk Roles of a dem Teach skills and techniques, not answer questions Teaching academic IT skills Answering student queries Reporting to a member of staff acting as class leader Working as a member of a team Assisting with class set up and tidy up.

http://fms-itskills.ncl.ac.uk Responsibilities of a dem Prepare thoroughly Ensure students learn through a question-based approach to teaching. Seek advice and guidance from other members of the teaching team Frequent reflective practice following each teaching session.

http://fms-itskills.ncl.ac.uk About the role Work in a team of up to 8 inc session lead (staff) Most sessions last for 2 hours Up to 90 students 2-6 hours per month Each week is different Sessions are allocated evenly across the dem team of ~15 students Sessions are allocated according to availability Payment month in arrears

http://fms-itskills.ncl.ac.uk About the training Approved by UTLC and PVC TL 2009 Compulsory for new dems Expected for returning dems ITLHE Part A not required but advised Important because: You need to know what the role involves We need to know you have the necessary skills Part training, part interview Paid at half-rate

http://fms-itskills.ncl.ac.uk Application process Submit Application form and 3 completed courses Complete further courses and attend training session Hired as a dem and begin employment If invited to proceed Starts in May Training in September Teaching starts Freshers’ week Notified early August
