HIS EARLY YEARS Ritsos’ life as a child in Monemvasia was carefree and he had a great time living close to nature. His mother, who was of great culture, gave him a lot of love and affection. His grandmother Anna used to tell him fairytales, a Moraitis man as well who took care of him and Loula after their grandfather’s murder in 1910. Ritsos showed from an early age a great aptitude in arts as he started painting and playing the piano while, as he himself reveals, he wrote poems from the age of seven. His mother gave him her full support and believed that one day he will succeed Kostis Palamas. Later she subscribed him to the periodical”The children’s formation”.
