3 Using a search engine  A search engine is software which enables you to search the Web to find information on almost any conceivable topic  A popular search engine is Google Start Internet Explorer Type the address www.google.co.uk into the Address bar and click the Go button to display the Google website home page Al Ittihad Private School-Jumaira Module 7 “Web Browsing and communication” Amira Mohammed Zedan

4 Searching by keyword  Google allows you to type a word or phrase, and then comes back with a list of related web pages Type a key word or phrase into the search box and click the Google Search button A list of links to websites that match your search words will appear Al Ittihad Private School-Jumaira Module 7 “Web Browsing and communication” Amira Mohammed Zedan

5 Including and excluding pages  You can tell Google to exclude topics you don’t want by adding a keyword with a minus in front  Similarly, if you are particularly interested in a topic, you can add keywords with a plus in front  For example, searching for ringing -bird +bell will return results for bell ringing but exclude topics about ringing birds Al Ittihad Private School-Jumaira Module 7 “Web Browsing and communication” Amira Mohammed Zedan

6 Completing a web-based form  Consumer websites are great places for shopping  In general, you pay by credit card, but some sites operate a system where money is transferred directly into and out of your bank account  Online shopping on a secure site is no less safe than high street shopping  Forms are frequently used on web pages – they allow you to type in information about yourself  A web-based form is usually linked to a database, and works in a similar way to a database form  An interactive web-based form can also display information that might change depending on the information you type in Al Ittihad Private School-Jumaira Module 7 “Web Browsing and communication” Amira Mohammed Zedan

7 Submitting and resetting a web-based form  Check you have correctly completed an online form before electronically sending it to the company  All forms will have a Submit button (sometimes called Send or similar) – click this to send your completed form to the company  They might also have a Reset button – click this to clear all the fields on the form Al Ittihad Private School-Jumaira Module 7 “Web Browsing and communication” Amira Mohammed Zedan

8 Al Ittihad Private School-Jumaira Module 7 “Web Browsing and communication” Amira Mohammed Zedan Temporary Internet files  Internet Explorer keeps data on the web pages you visit in a cache  These are temporary Internet files that the browser can access more quickly than downloading the page afresh  They use up disk space rapidly, especially if you use the Internet a lot and you will need to delete them from time to time Click Internet Options on the Tools menu Click Delete in the Browsing history area of the General tab Click the Delete files... button in the Temporary Internet Files area of the Delete Browsing History window that appears
