2. Continuity and Change  Show both in essay if possible.  You will usually see more change than continuity.  Examine all aspects of civilization or group you are discussing.  GRAPES

3. Read the Question  Make sure you understand what the question is asking.  Are there specific aspects of the civilization or group you are to address? (social, political, economic)  Make sure you address the time period parameters given in the question.

4. Rubric  Thesis that addresses issues and time period. (1 point)  Address all parts of the question. (2)  Back up your thesis with historical evidence. This is the meat to your essay. (2)  Show the change or continuity by discussing historical context. (1)  Analyzes the process of the change or continuity through time. (1)

5. Essay Outline  Introduction Paragraph Well written thesis that addresses all issues discussed in the question and the time period Background/filler information to make a well rounded paragraph Pick 3 issues/aspects to discuss if none are provided in the question.

6. Essay Outline  Second Paragraph Addresses first issue from beginning of time period to the end of time period Topic sentence for the paragraph At least four other sentences in which you give historical evidence to back up the thesis Will show a change or continuity

10. General Rules for Essays  Never, never, never use first person!  No I, Me, or We  Do NOT write, “In this essay…”. Never refer to your essay in your essay.  Do NOT write, “I think” or “In my opinion”. No one cares about your opinion. State ideas as fact. You will be providing evidence to back up what you say.

11. General Rules for Essays  I don’t grade on how many words or pages you write.  I grade using the AP Rubric.

12. Your Essay Question  Describe how the Five Tribes (Southeastern Indians) changed and stayed the same politically, economically, and religiously from the mid 1700s to the post Civil War era.

13. Thesis  Needs to state the Five Tribes changed/stayed the same in those three areas  Needs to state the time period  Also, lists specific ways they changed/stayed the same in the three areas  Will probably need to be more than one sentence

14. Your Essay Question  Describe how the lives of African- Americans in Oklahoma changed and stayed the same from the time of Indian Removals in the 1830s to the 1970s, focusing on topics such as freedom, voting rights, discrimination, and segregation.

15. Thesis  Needs to state that African-Americans changed/stayed the same in those areas.  Needs to state the time period.  Needs to specifically state what the changes and continuities are.  Will probably be more than one sentence.

16. Let’s Work It Out Together  What are the three specified areas?  What are the time period parameters?  Is there change or continuity, or both?  What can our thesis be?  How will we set up the rest of our essay?
