A Poor Home in Mexico City Usually the poorest people in Mexico City are recent migrants. They often live in slums, or poor houses, on the edge of the city. Most of these slums are one room houses with no electricity and no running water. They are usually made of cardboard and scraps of metal. The streets are typically dirt roads with trash littered everywhere. People who live here typically have no jobs. There are also people who are “working poor” which means they are paid little to nothing for their work.
