Location Continued… Marseille, France is located in southwestern France. Marseille is the 2 nd largest city in France exceeding 1,200,000 people.

Climate Marseille, France has a tropical climate. It does receive snow, but it comes in a heavy fall and in unpredictab le and irregular patterns

The Marseille Cathedral The Marseille Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church and a National Monument in France.

The Opera De Marseille The Opera De Marseille is a unique Opera house in France. In 1685 it was the 2 nd Opera house in France, after Bordeaux that was erected on a tennis court.

The Stade Velodrome The Stade Velodrome is home to the Olympique de Marseille football club. Also in 1998 FIFA World Cup was taken place here as well as the 2007 Rugby World Cup. It can hold over 60,000 people.

Les Iles de Frioul The Iles de Frioul is a collection of 4 islands. They are the Pomègues, Ratonneau, If and Tiboulen. Off the coast of Marseille, the islands were perfect for trading and resting places for sailors. It was uninhabited until the early 16 th century. Later on it was a prison.

Fort St. Nicholas Fort St. Nicholas was built on the orders of the “Sun King”, or Louis the XIV. It was built to protect France from enemies coming on shore.

Jardin des Vestiges It was originally built to express France’s rich heritage, but it turned out to be a shopping mall in the 1960’s.

Abbaye St. Victor The Abbaye St. Victor is Marseille’s oldest church. It was built in the 5 th century and on Christian martyr's tomb.
