17 Cable : technological trends – All going IP…one day Today : each service gets its own RF channels : “silos” Analog Digital Video (Broadcast) : traditional QAM Narrowcast : QAM with “SDV processsing/multiplexing” VOD : QAM with “VOD processsing/multiplexing” HSD (Internet, OTT) : DOCSIS QAM  Difficult service allocation (broadcast and OTT for example) With CCAP (Convergent Cable Access Platform) : Any service on any QAM CCAP = CMAP + CESAR standards Very dense QAM, lower power consumption Flexibility to mix anything : data filling the space given by video in capped VBR mode Progressively (and probably slowly), all services can migrate to IP (DOCSIS) : “Cable IPTV” Cable operators can migrate progressively to a full IP, FTTH/GPON based Node Split, FTTLA, RFoG CCAP to give more flexibility between silos (broadcast, narrow cast SDV, traditionnal VOD, Internet, OTT) Full CCAP with all services converging to IP : long term > 5 years (10 years ?) 17
