STORET and the Water Quality Exchange Status Update Dwane Young OWOW/AWPD/MB April 26, 2007
4
What is WQX? Water Quality Exchange (WQX) Version 1.0 is a new system that facilitates the submission of water quality and related environmental monitoring data between EPA and its partners over the internet WQX Version 1.0 uses web technology and a common defined template (the WQX schema) to flow physical, chemical and fish tissue data from an EPA data partner’s own database to the existing STORET Warehouse
5
How does WQX work?
6
EPA’s Vision for WQX An integration of water monitoring data to improve national decisions Water quality data management and maintenance at the state level, data sharing and synthesis at the national level A standard data sharing template (schema) that multiple data partners can publish to (States, Tribes, USGS, others)
7
WQX Status WQX went on-line on February 15th, 2007, and is ready to receive data WI and Yurok Tribe have successfully submitted data to WQX A number of states and tribes participated in the testing and are close to submittal: NH, MI,TX, MA, OR, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, Wind River Consortium of Tribes NH, MI,TX, MA, OR, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, Wind River Consortium of Tribes
8
WQX Schedule WQX Version 1.0 data flow in production (Feb 07) Physical, chemical, microbiological, and fish tissue data only Physical, chemical, microbiological, and fish tissue data only Add Biological/Habitat data to schema Begin Bio/Habitat WQX pilot (Early 07) Begin Bio/Habitat WQX pilot (Early 07) Finalize WQX Bio/Habitat Schema (Jan 08) Finalize WQX Bio/Habitat Schema (Jan 08) Bio/Habitat WQX in production (May 08) Bio/Habitat WQX in production (May 08) Develop Web tool for XML Generation Tool available for Phys/Chem data (Feb 08) Tool available for Phys/Chem data (Feb 08) Final tool, including Bio/Habitat (Jul 08) Final tool, including Bio/Habitat (Jul 08)
9
Biological and Habitat Data Currently determining data elements for exchange of Biological and Habitat data Using core elements from STORET and EDAS (Ecological Data Application Systems) to model tracking of Biological and Habitat condition Will be involving EPA Regions and States this year in determining the final schema
10
Core Biological Components Support Probabilistic Designs Station Weights Stratum Identify Reference Sites
11
Core Biological Components (cont.) Support multiple varieties of Biological Data Population Census Frequency Distributions Group Summary Etc.
12
Core Biological Components (cont.)
13
Support Biological Metrics Store multiple indicies and the metrics define them for a given site Capture the Index and Metric ‘Scale’
14
Schedule for Distributed STORET SIM 2.0.2 Release (May 2006) Transition from STORET distributed database system to new WQX submission system (2007-2008) No longer accept STORET data exports (Sept 2009)
15
STORET Warehouse Updates The National STORET Data Warehouse enhancements for improved data accessibility New Watershed Summary – Available Now New Watershed Summary – Available Now New Web Services – Available Summer 2007 New Web Services – Available Summer 2007 Please visit the STORET website for more information : www.epa.gov/storet
