Goal Students will review the various choices and consequences of the decision making process and discuss the differences between wants and needs. To Learn how to make the best decisions to adhere to the Code of Conduct of the Clayton County Public School System

INTRODUCTION Whether it’s drug use, lying, or the decision to break a confidence, decisions teenagers make can have long-lasting effects on and the best choices are not always obvious. Additionally, the skills needed to make good decisions are not inborn…we must learn them and practice them repeatedly before they become internalized, or “automatic.” When confronted with an important decision, it can seem overwhelming to a teen who has not had sufficient experience engaging in a step by- step process where options are generated and evaluated for their likely consequences.

Explore how their own goals and values shape the decisions they make. Learn to use brainstorming to generate options and ideas. Learn to evaluate the possible consequences of decisions. Draw on their past experiences to understand how friends can influence their decisions. Examine how feelings and impulses affect their choices. Learning Objectives:

Video Narrative Part 1: Values, Goals and Decisions When Joel asks his brother Rick if he can borrow his radio, Rick says no. When Rick leaves, Joel takes the radio anyway. Later that day, the handle on the radio breaks and Joel is confronted with a tough decision. Should he put the radio back and pretend he never took it, or should he apologize to Rick and offer to replace it? Joel and his friend Nina discuss the problem. Joel tries to justify lying by saying that Rick would do the same thing to him, but Nina points out that Joel has always said lying is wrong. Joel realizes that he doesn’t want to be like Rick. Nina helps Joel make the choice to tell Rick what happened. The narrator explains how Joel took the first step in the decision making process: he stated the decision, then used his values to reach it. Joel knew that he wanted to be a fair and honest person, not a liar. Examining his values and goals helped Joel make the best decision for him.
