 20% of the population in the 13 colonies was of African.  Blacks living in the Chesapeake worked on tobacco plantations and large farms.  Most blacks lived in the Chesapeake region.

Slavery  Slavery exist in every colony.  The majority, but not all, of these African Americans were slaves.

Colonial Americans depended on their wits, their tools and their weapons for daily survival and eventually used them to win freedom from British rule. Farmers used horse- and ox- drawn cultivators, plows, spiky rollers and harrows for breaking up the ground before planting. Colonial craftsmen and builders had a wide range of tools in their toolboxes and sheds. Colonial Americans protected their homes and put meat on the tables with their guns. One of the most popular was a fowling piece that could be loaded with small lead balls for birds and small game or large balls for deer and large game. Militia regulations required members to own at least one firearm and one bladed weapon such as a sword, hatchet or bayonet.

Remnant groups of many historic livestock breeds face new obstacles as modern agriculture favors “improved” breeds. The variety of food crops and livestock usually kept slaves busy throughout the year.

 In the early years of what later became the United States, Christian religious groups played an influential role in each of the British colonies, and most attempted to enforce strict religious observance through both colony governments and local town rules.
