Multiplication methods
2
Multiplying Multiplication is mainly taught in three ways - the grid method, Chinese multiplication and traditional column method. The Grid Method involves breaking the number up into hundreds, tens, units etc. Multiplying them together and then adding the answers. E.g. : 34 x 65 Break the 34 into 30 and 4, 30 4 similarly break 65 into 60 and 5 60 5
3
Next….. …. multiply the numbers together ( e.g. 30 x 60 = 1800) 3 x 6 = 18, then add 2 zeros 30 4 60 1800 240 5 150 20 finally add the answers 1 8 0 0 2 4 0 1 5 0 1 1 2 0 2 2 1 0
4
Chinese multiplication is set out similarly to the grid method but it has the bonus of never having to multiply numbers higher than 9x9. 34 6 5 E.g. 34 x 65 Multiply the numbers together, placing the tens above the diagonal line and units underneath. 34 6 1 8 1 5 2 0 4 5 2
5
Next….. …... add together the numbers on the diagonals. 6 1 8 1 5 2 0 4 5 2 34 0 2 1 1 2 1 So, 34 x 65 = 2210
6
Or the more traditional column method can be used First multiply the 34 by 5 3 4 x 6 5 1 7 0 Then multiply the 34 by 60, this can be done by adding a 0 and multiplying by 6 3 4 x 6 5 1 7 0 2 0 4 0 Finally add the two answers 3 4 x 6 5 1 7 0 +2 0 4 0 2 2 1 0
