3. Names… cont. CIRCUMFERENCE is the distance around a circular object. If you needed to measure a basket ball could you use a ruler? NO! To measure around, or get the CIRCUMFERENCE of a ball, you could wrap a piece of string around it and then just measure the string!

4. Tools We use three main tools to measure length. A metric ruler is used for small to medium sized objects – can you think or an example? A meter stick for medium to large things – what would you use a meter stick to measure? A measuring tape is used to measure the length of odd shaped or round objects. When would a measuring tape be the best tool to measure length?

5. Metric Units The basic unit of length is the meter and is represented by a lowercase m (m = meter) Metric Units Go By Tens! For long distances, like travel, use KILOMETERS: 1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters The base unit for length is a METER: 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) For medium to small sized objects like shoes or books we use CENTIMETERS. To measure very small things we use millimeters: 1 Centimeter = 10 Millimeters (mm)
