Welcome to Year 1’s Maths Family Workshop Using and Applying
2
New Curriculum and Assessment At Blossomfield we have started to use the new curriculum and assessment documents that go with it. As a school we believe that it is very important for children to apply the skills that they are taught, into real life situations.
3
Shape How many different shapes can you see? Discuss the properties of each shape, for example it is a triangle because I can see 3 sides and 3 corners. How many of each shape can you see?
4
Money Identify different coins, put them in order smallest amount to largest. Use coins to make different amounts. Can you give me change if I buy this item with £1?
5
Measuring Before measuring ask children to make estimates. Are they sensible guesses? Using the ruler carefully, making sure the 0 is lined up with the start of the line. Measure to the closest cm.
6
Word Problems When working out problems we teach children to identify what the problem is asking us to do. Highlight key parts. Using visual aids can help. This house has 2 flights of stairs, each with 10 stairs. How many stairs are there altogether?
7
Number There are endless possibilities to the maths activities you can do with number cards. We have thought of some but please feel free to do any others you can think of and share your ideas with others on your table. Ordering, finding the missing number(s), find the number with 4 tens and 7 units, find 2 more/less than my number, sequences of 2’s, 5’s, 10’s.
8
Number Continued We are very proud of our Lego house and it would be a shame to dismantle it without ‘getting some maths out of it’! How many red, blue, green bricks? How many bricks in a column? How can you use this to work out how many bricks in 1 wall? There are 2 windows on each side, how many windows altogether? When the numbers are large use jottings or tallies.
9
Moving around the activities Please feel free to try all the activities or just one or two. We realise you may not have time for all of them! Some of the activities have sheets that you can record answers on to but please feel free to work practically or on whiteboards if you wish. Maths Games Ask if we can get you anything or help in any way
