Radio Control Airplanes or Remote Controlled Mini Air Vehicle By: Mohammad Amin Sajedi Pre-University Student Imam Khomeini Educational Complex

History ► The earliest examples of electronically guided model aircraft were hydrogen-filled model airships of the late 19th century. They were flown as a music hall act around theater auditoriums using a basic form of spark- emitted radio signal. In 1920s, the Royal Aircraft Establishment of Britain built and tested the Larynx, a monoplane with a 100-mile (160 km) range powered by a Lynx engine. It was not until the 1930s that the British came up with the Queen Bee, a modified de Havilland Tiger Moth, and similar target aircraft.

History Kettering Bug

Types Beginners ► ► park flyers and trainers More Advanced ► ► glow plug engine, electric powered and sailplane aircraft Experts ► ► jets, pylon racers, helicopters

Plane characteristics ► ► Wing location High wing Low wing Mid wing

What is a MAV??? ► ► MAV is basically a much smaller prototype of an actual aircraft and hence its dynamics are much different and tougher to understand. ► ► There are 3 degrees of freedom for a MAV: roll, pitch and yaw. ► ► To achieve these motions, there are three control surfaces: ailerons, elevators and rudder.

CONTROL SURFACES

Forces on a MAV

Steps to make a MAV Choose Material for body : 1. Balsa ‐ Soft and light Easy to work on Available in strips Most widely used in aero modeling 2. Thermocole / Foam ‐ Choose High Density Thermocole (HDT), Foam Very light Needs Reinforcement

Steps to make a MAV Get a Brushless Motor to power your MAV and a speed Controller Brushless Motor speed Controller

Steps to make a MAV PROPELLER: ► ► Fixed Pitch ► ► 2.5 cm to 65 cm ► ► 50 gm to 15kg aircraft

Steps to make a MAV ► Actuators - - Servos - - Power Source - - Remote Controller - - RC Receiver

Steps to make a MAV

Engine ► ► internal combustion engines ► ► electric motors ► ► Jet ► ► rocket engines

Remote Control ► ► Frequencies and sub-channels Frequency determines the line of communication between a receiver and transmitter. The transmitter and receiver must both be on the same frequency so the plane can be controlled.
