Programme Welcome and outline for event Overview of Internal Assessment in Physics Assessment of Outcome 1 Workshop 1, assessing Outcome 1 Assessment of Outcome 2 Workshop 2, assessing Outcome 2 Verification & key messages from verification Other Support, Unit Assessment Support Packs Plenary

Overview of Unit Assessment in Physics National 3,4 and 5 Common – 3 Units – Outcome 1; 5/6 Assessment Standards – Outcome 2; 4 Assessment Standards  Assessment Standards transferability within a level, all except 2.1 which, on its own, is not transferable either across Units or between levels  Assessment Standards transferability between levels, watch key area  Achievement of a Unit at one level can be used as evidence for the Course at the level below.

Outcome 1 Assessment Activity 1 Apply skills of scientific inquiry and draw on knowledge and understanding of the key areas of this Unit to carry out an experiment/practical investigation by : – 1.1 Planning an experiment/practical investigation (not National 3) – 1.2 Following procedures safely – 1.3 Making and recording observations/measurements correctly – 1.4 Presenting results in an appropriate format – 1.5 Drawing valid conclusions – 1.6 Evaluating experimental procedures

Outcome 1 Assessment Activity 1 Apply skills of scientific inquiry and draw on knowledge and understanding of the key areas of this Unit to carry out an experiment/practical investigation: – Transferable across Units – Meeting the 5/6 assessment standards – Generating evidence – Reassessment – Candidate support – Unit Assessment Support for National 5 Physics: Waves and Radiation (H25A 75) — Package 1: Unit by Unit approach, pg 15/16

Outcome 1 Assessment Activity 1

From Unit Assessment Support for National 5 Physics: Waves and Radiation (H25A 75) — Package 1: Unit by Unit approach

Outcome 1 Assessment Activity 1 Workshop 1 – Scripts 1, 2 and 3 – Use the table; Judging Evidence for Physics – Record decisions/comment/issues on scripts Time 15 minutes Discussion on scripts

Overview of Unit Assessment in Physics National 3, 4 and 5 Common – 3 Units – Outcome 1; 5/6 Assessment Standards – Outcome 2; 4 Assessment Standards  Assessment Standards transferability within a level, all except 2.1  Assessment Standards transferability between levels, watch key area  Unit transferability to lower level

Outcome 2 Assessment Activities 2 & 3 Draw on knowledge and understanding of the key areas of this Unit and apply scientific skills by: – 2.1Making accurate statements – 2.2Describing an application – 2.3Describing a physics issue in terms of the effect on the environment/society – 2.4Solving problems All transferable across Units except 2.1 Activity 2: 2.2 and 2.3 Activity 3: 2.1 and 2.4

Outcome 2 Assessment Activity 2 Assessment Standards 2.2 and 2.3 2.2Describing an application – The description of an application of physics should demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the application. 2.3Describing a physics issue in terms of the effect on the environment/ society – A physics issue should be described in such a way that its effect on the environment/society is clear.  Generating evidence  Candidate support

Outcome 2 Assessment Activity 3 Assessment Standards 2.1 and 2.4 2.1Making accurate statements – At least half of the statements made by the candidate should be correct for the Unit. (An unanswered opportunity is deemed to be incorrect.) 2.4Solving problems – Candidates must demonstrate all of the following problem-solving skills: – Making predictions (MP) – Selecting information (SI) – Processing information (PI) – Analysing information (AI)  Generating evidence  Candidate support

Outcome 2 Assessment Activities 2 & 3 Workshop 2 – Scripts 4, 5, 6 and 7 – Use the table; Judging Evidence for Physics – Use Question papers Assessment grid and marking guidance – Record decisions/comment/issues on scripts Time 25 minutes Discussion on scripts

Summary Overview of Unit Assessment in Physics National 3, 4 and 5 Common – 3 Units – Outcome 1; 5/6 Assessment Standards – Outcome 2; 4 Assessment Standards All Assessment Standards are transferable across Units at a given level except 2.1 but not necessarily across SCQF levels due to need to meet Key Area requirement Questions

Verification Process Nominees are teachers/lecturers drawn from the pool of those nominated by local authorities/SCIS/colleges. Step 1 – nominee checks that info on the sample form matches the sample, then selects one level to review the centre’s assessment decisions. Step 2 – Approach to Assessment: Is the centre using a Unit Assessment Support Pack or a prior-verified assessment? If yes – centre is accepted for “Approach”. If no – nominee reviews approach to check if in line with national standards - the approach is ‘accepted’, ‘accepted*’ or not accepted. Accepted * - used where the centre’s approach has some minor issue(s) and the centre is given advice for future assessments.

Verification Process Step 3 – Assessment Judgements Nominee reviews the assessment judgements made by the assessor (and internal verifier). Where nominee the decisions are in line with national standards, centre is ‘accepted’; where there are minor issues centre may receive an ‘accepted*’ decision; where the decisions are not in line with national standards the centre is not accepted. All decisions are agreed between the nominee(s) and the Principal Verifier/Senior Team Leader. Process repeats for next level in the sample from the centre. Step 4 – Verification report Nominee prepares verification report for centre.

National 4 Added Value Unit (AVU) Internally assessed The fourth Unit of the National 4 course. Outcome 1 The candidate will: 1 Apply skills and knowledge to investigate a topical issue in physics and its impact on the environment/society by: – 1.1 Choosing, with justification, a relevant issue in physics – 1.2 Researching the issue – 1.3 Presenting appropriate information/data – 1.4 Explaining the impact, in terms of the physics involved – 1.5 Communicating the findings of the investigation

National 4 Added Value Unit (AVU) Stage 1Researching Stage 2 Communicating – a report – a presentation, with supplementary/supporting material such as PowerPoint slides with notes – a conference/annotated information poster – an information leaflet  Total time recommended, not more than 8 hours

National 4 Added Value Unit (AVU)  Support from Candidate’s Guide: You could use a candidate’s log, journal or other suitable way to record your research. Unit Assessment for National 4 Physics Assignment (H25C 74) — Added Value Unit You need to choose a relevant topical issue in physics to investigate. This must relate to a key area of the National 4 Physics Course and must have an impact on the environment and/or society. Your assessor will help you to choose a suitable topic. Now, in your candidate’s log or equivalent:  state clearly the issue to be investigated  state briefly in what way the issue is relevant to the environment/society Once you have chosen your issue, you need to find out about it.
