ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY Miss Scillieri 6 th Grade Science Do-Now: Come in quietly, take out your homework. Write your HW into agenda Answer the following question in complete sentences as HW is being checked What is a trade-off? How is using fossil fuels a trade-off ? Learning Target: To evaluate the steps of the engineering design process. To apply those steps to an exit slip HW: Lesson worksheet

Do-Now: October 28 th, 2014
4
TECHNOLOGY TECHNOLOGY IS THE USE OF SCIENCE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS OR MAKE PEOPLE’S LIVES EASIER.
5
ENGINEERING ENGINEERING IS THE DESIGNING AND DEVELOPING OF A NEW TECHNOLOGY. AN ENGINEER IS SOMEONE WHO DOES THIS.
6
There are steps to the Engineering Design Process, just like there are steps to the scientific method.
7
Problem Identification THE FIRST STEP IS TO IDENTIFY A PROBLEM THAT TECHNOLOGY MIGHT HELP OR SOLVE.
8
SOLUTION DESIGN THE ENGINEER PROPOSES A DESIGN THAT COULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE DESIGN SHOULD 1. MEET A HUMAN NEED 2. USE SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES 3. BE SUITABLE FOR USE BY MORE THAN ONE PERSON
9
SOLUTION DESIGN FIGURE OUT HOW THE TECHNOLOGY WILL WORK. EXPLAIN THE TECHNOLOGY, USE DRAWINGS OR MODELS. IDENTIFY MATERIALS, ESTIMATE COSTS AND DEVELOPMENT TIME. LIST POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND RISKS
10
IMPLEMENTATION AND TESTING WHEN A DESIGN IS ACCEPTED A PROTOTYPE IS MADE. A PROTOTYPE IS A WORKING MODEL OF THE NEW TECHNOLOGY. The prototype is tested to see how it performs in real world conditions.
11
Evaluation Does the design work? How can its success be measured? Does it solve the problem? Have risks been minimized? Can it be improved?
12
RISKS AND BENEFITS BENEFITS ARE WAYS THE NEW TECHNOLOGY MEETS PEOPLE’S NEEDS. RISKS ARE HOW THE NEW TECHNOLOGY MIGHT HARM PEOPLE. WEIGHING THE HARM AGAINST THE BENEFITS IS CALLED THE RISK-BENEFIT ANALYSIS.
13
What is bioengineering???? Bioengineering is the development of new technology in the fields of biology and medicine.
14
ADAPTIVE BIOENGINEERING CHANGING OR ADAPTING A DEVICE TO BE USED BY A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY. LIKE A VOICE- ACTIVATED COMPUTER
15
ASSISTIVE BIOENGINEERING DESIGNING TECHNOLOGY TO HELP OR ASSIST A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY IN THEIR DAILY LIFE. LIKE A HEARING AID
16
BIOENGINEERING IN AGRICULTURE BIOENGINEERS ADD OR CHANGE GENES IN FOOD CROPS. THESE GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS MIGHT BE CHANGED TO NEED LESS WATER OR STAY FRESH LONGER.
17
An Example Problem: Much of the world’s people do not have access to clean water. People have to walk for miles every day to carry water home. Usually this is the job of the women. Solution: The Hippo Roller http://vimeo.com/ 72713044#t=9 http://vimeo.com/ 72713044#t=9
