1 Good morning! Bell work:
Make sure you have your 7Habits book and have a seat. Be ready to go when the bell rings. Emilano, you’re up! Learning Intentions Success Criteria We’re learning to… understand the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset apply these ways of thinking to real-life situations We’ll know we’re successful when we can… analyze and discuss several scenarios complete the sorting activity with ease develop both fixed mind set and growth mind set responses and evaluate the outcomes of those in a “Mindset Matrix”

2 Why do you think the girl might not want to go out for soccer?
Read the slide. Discuss the following question with your table partner: Why do you think the girl might not want to go out for soccer? The Scenario… For over a week, Nelly has talked about middle school soccer tryouts.  “World Cup, here I come!” she yells, dribbling the ball between two orange cones in the backyard. Friday morning, Nelly is visibly tense.  She pokes at her cereal and instigates a fight with her dad, Delly. In an attempt to calm her nerves, Delly reassures, “I’ll be rooting for you today. Remember what I’ve been saying – you’re so talented, there’s no reason to be nervous.” “Dad, I’m not sure I wanna go out for soccer anymore.” She hangs her head down and mumbles, “I’m just going to take the bus home after school.” Delly probes gently, “Did something happen?” Nelly concludes, “I just… I just don’t want to try out.”

3 What’s Your Mindset?

4 Growth Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck Exploring a Growth Mindset by Stanfordbusiness
“When we learn a growth mindset, we understand no one is fixed and that everyone has the potential for change.”

5 Fixed Mindset Possess a stagnant view of intelligence;
Want to look smart but have little regard for learning; Have negative views of effort; Equate working hard with low ability.

6 Example When students with fixed mindsets are met with a real challenge, they often… refuse to take advantage of extra help consider cheating on future tests tend to avoid the challenging classes all together

7 Growth Mindset Learning is more important than getting good grades.
The more you work, the better you become. Even geniuses work hard for great accomplishments.

8 Example Confronted by a disappointing test grade, students with a growth mindset often… say they will study harder actually follow through and study harder seem to enjoy challenges.

9 Growth Mindset I believe that
intelligence is not fixed. My intelligence can be improved through learning. I thrive on challenge. I throw myself into difficult tasks. I am self-confident. Growth Mindset I react to failure by trying harder. I have learning goals. I like feedback on my performance so I can improve.

10 Mindset can affect the quality and longevity of personal relationships…
Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset Less likely to solve problems in their relationships because they believe that human personality traits are fixed. Believe people can change and grow, however, are more confident that confronting concerns in their relationships will lead to resolutions.

11 Examples of a FIXED MINDSET Examples of a GROWTH MINDSET
Intelligence may be partly inherited, but it is also influenced strongly be the environment. It’s best to do things you know you know how to do. No one in my family is good at_______ When you make a mistake, it means you’re just not good at what you’re trying. If you have to work hard, then you’re not very smart. You can’t really change how intelligent you are. I like to hear about other people’s successes, because this inspires me. I compare my score to those of my friends and if theirs are higher, I feel bad. When someone criticizes me, it means they think I can do better. You can actually get more intelligent over time. Hard work is how you become successful. When you make a mistake, it means you have a chance to learn something new. It’s best to take risks and challenge yourself, even if you’re not sure you can do it. If someone criticizes me, it means they think I’m not good enough. I’m always finding opportunities to learn something new. I’m always being judged and evaluated and I have to try to appear smart. I haven’t mastered this idea yet. Some people are just born smart.

12 One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don't invest any energy in them, because I know who I am. -Michelle Obama Everybody has goals, aspirations or whatever, and everybody has been at a point in their life where nobody believed in them. -Eminem I have short goals - to get better every day, to help my teammates every day - but my only ultimate goal is to win an NBA championship. It's all that matters. I dream about it. I dream about it all the time, how it would look, how it would feel. It would be so amazing. - LeBron James Every season is a new challenge to me, and I always set out to improve in terms of games, goals, assists. - Cristiano Ronaldo

13 Can you apply this stuff to real life?!
Partner up with someone. Read the scenarios provided. Pick one on which to focus. Brainstorm, discuss, and create one mindset matrix for that scenario.
