Education Facilities Research Group Water Conservation Low flow controllers Dual flushing cisterns Push button release taps and bubblers Native and drought tolerant landscaping Water tanks (selected sites) Dams (selected sites) Grey water reuse (selected sites)
6
Education Facilities Research Group Comfort Condition Project To establish: – the overall performance of the latest school designs – the impact of variations in design – the performance of specific ESD initiatives – the level of use of features to improve comfort conditions
7
Education Facilities Research Group Parameters The school day is 9am to 3pm Concerned with comfort conditions in the occupied zone of a room
8
Education Facilities Research Group Findings The hottest part of the day occurs outside school hours The external, under eave location is the hottest during the day (Hot Day) The external, under eave location is the coolest during the night (Hot Day) The rooms do not cool down to the level of the external, ambient temperature Loggers on the southern and eastern walls (internal) record higher temperatures (February)

Education Facilities Research Group Tour Sites – Buxton PS BUILT 1996, FINAL EVALUATION 2004 a)Worked Well Livos nil VOC content paints (internal) Tung oil finish Water based adhesives – have not failed Pinboards (Forbo Krommenie) Note: many inclusions were/are now standard – have performed well
20
Education Facilities Research Group Tour Sites – Buxton PS b) Worked not so well Many of the external elements have not performed up to expectations. This has either been the product or it was unsuitable in the school context –Use of native grasses –Stormwater reuse –On-site aerated sewerage treatment –Underground drip irrigation
21
Education Facilities Research Group Tour Sites – Camden HS Extensive ESD initiatives incorporated: –Most dominant feature is the use of solar chimneys –Material selection: timber screens, brick internal walls for thermal mass –Collection of water runoff into a dam
