 I can use proper grammar. I can score 80% or higher on my DFA. I can identify, analyze and evaluate persuasive appeals. I can evaluate how language choice and delivery style affect mood and tone to impact the audience. I can apply listening skills and use effective delivery skills.

 Complete numbers 18-20  Don’t forget your justification!

 18) J – wordiness: “Protect” and “defend” mean essentially the same thing. J eliminates “defend”. G and H use “protects” with “to”, which is incorrect; the infinitive is “to protect”.  19) D – wordiness: when OMIT is offered as an answer choice, examine the relevance of the underlined information.  20) G – Sentence Sense: The sentence beginning with “Which” is actually a fragment. G correctly makes the dependent clause a part of the first sentence. H uses a connecting phrase that is inappropriate in context. J creates a grammatically incorrect sentence.

 Read the passage carefully.  Answer the questions on your own paper and then put them into the clickers.

 Discuss answers and chart your performance!  B  C  D  B  C  A

 On your paper list answers to the following: o How do you persuade someone to do something or think a certain way? o What are key words (language choice) you would use in order to persuade someone? o How would your approach the person or deliver your argument? (would you look the person in the eye, would you use certain facial expressions or gestures, etc.) o If you could invent a product for the general public to buy, what would that product be and what purpose would it serve?  Discuss!

 Ethos- ethical, right versus wrong, creditability  Pathos- emotional, personal story, pull at your heart strings  Logos- logical, facts, statistics, numbers

 There are powerful words that good speakers and writers use in order to persuade others to do something they want them to do.  Use these words we have discussed when you are trying to persuade someone!

 Reading word for word from your notes  Memorized (much practiced!)  Impromptu- deliver with little or no preparation  Some prepared structure (notes or outline) but also “off the cuff” (not too practiced) o Also look for the following: Volume (are they confident?) Inflection (is there variation in their voice – not monotone?) Eye contact (do they have eye contact we the people they are talking to?) Facial Expressions (do their expressions engage the audience?)

 Shark Tank is a TV show on ABC, where inventors try to persuade “the sharks” (investors) to invest their money in the inventors product.  Lets watch and see what persuasive appeals the inventors use in order to persuade the investors.  Use your graphic organizer to analyze and evaluate these pitches.

 Hyconn 1:30-7:52  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXsPJaNMNVI  Lolla Cup 4:52-10:00  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHeI6lo_iaE  Bambooee 19:14-21:57  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8tN81r5Uy4

 What did you like/dislike about the product?  Who was the target audience (who was the product made for)?  What power words did they use?  What was the delivery style?  What persuasive appeals did they use?  Was there an offer made? Why/why not?

 You will get into groups (total of 4 people).  Together, you will create/invent a new product. BE CREATIVE! o Requirements: It must be school appropriate! It must be an item that the general public would want to buy. You will need a drawing of the product or your can create the product. You must include persuasive appeals we have discussed. You must turn in your graphic organizer – your written pitch Out of the 4 members, all can present the group pitch or one can be in charge of writing the pitch and one in charge of creating the mock product and two in charge of pitching the product.

 You may want to add something to an existing product to make it better.  Be creative!  Be sure to fill out your organizer- this will become your proposal (pitch)!  You may use your cell phone for research.

 When you present your product, use your graphic organizer in order to hit all the requirements.  If you are acting as a shark- act as an investor, these people want your money- make them persuade you! You may use the questions provided. You will also score the pitch using the rubric provided.  If you are the audience, listen carefully, you will need to fill out the notes provided and score the pitch using the provided rubric.  Everyone must take part in the discussions following the pitches.

Answer the following questions on the same sheet of paper you used for your brainstorm.  What are the persuasive appeals and how do each persuade?  How can you use persuasive appeals?  Why/how are persuasive appeals, language choice, delivery style important?
