1
Properties of Matter Physical Properties- observable with your 5 senses –characteristic that is used to identify common objects –ex. Shape, hardness, color, smell, taste, density, mass
2
Chemical Propeties Chemical Properties –How a substance reacts with another substance –Ex. Hydrogen(BALLOON) reacting with oxygen –Rust - Iron reacting with oxygen in the air.
3
Mass Physical property Amount of matter a substance has –measured in grams. (g) –tells us how much matter is present
4
weight Weight = measure of force of gravity on a object. –Different than mass. Ex. Person @ sea-level vs. Person @ top Mt Everest –Same mass but different weights –Because of the distance from the center of the Earth
5
Density Amount of mass in a given volume –Grams / cubic centimeter –g / cm 3 –Density does not change with the amount of matter. –Ex. Water = density = 1.0 g/cm 3 - ALWAYS!
6
Try this! IF an object has a mass of 5.0g and has a volume of 10 cm 3. –What is the density of the object?
