2 Women’s changing roles Flappers- young women who were rebellious, energetic, fun-loving, and bold –Society disproved the actions of flappers and men who were around them –Wore short dresses –Short haircuts with close fitting hats –Heavy makeup –Drank and smoked

3 Women’s Changing roles con’t In the workforce –15% professionals –20% clerical work –Generally single and white –Often rejected from doctor and lawyer positions –Given secretarial positions –Usually left at entry level position with low wages –Expected to quit if got married or became pregnant

4 Voting –1920 women gained the right to vote –Most voted along the same lines of men –Few voted (35%) –Survey on why women didn’t vote 1/3 lacked interest 11% said women should not vote –Why women didn’t vote –Often had to make special arrangements if had children or lived in a rural area –Families discouraged them from voting –Not comfortable with idea of voting

5 Sheppard-Towner Act of 1921 –First welfare measure concerning women and children’s health End of child labor-failed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) failed –Women and men have equal rights

6 Women in politics –Jeannette Rankin- first woman to be in US house of representative 1916 –Nellie Tayloe Ross and Miriam A. Ferguson Elected governors in 1924 –By 1928 there were 145 women in 38 state legislatures

7 Change in demographics More people lived in urban areas than rural areas –Over 6 million moved Rural areas –Farmers did not do as well economically and became stressed Urban –Industrial and commercial economy boomed –Public high school population doubled

8 African Americans –Great migration 1860-93% of African Americans in the South 1910- 89% of African Americans in the South 1930- 80% of African Americans in the South –Often faced anger or hatred from whites –Women worked as household help for whites- received low wages

9 Other migration –Congress limited migration- especially from southern and eastern Europe, China and Japan –Immigrants from Mexico and Canada were given low paying jobs Mexicans worked mostly on ranches and farms in California and Texas Barrio- Spanish-speaking neighborhoods Canadians worked in the northeast –Paper mills, potato fields, forests

10 suburbs Population grew –Transportation by trolleys was inexpensive –Buses began to replace trolleys –Automobile became affordable Ex. Manhattan population decreased but Queens’s population increased

11 Heroes “Lucky Lindy” Charles Lindberg –Flew nonstop from New York to Paris in 33 ½ hours –People read about him in telegraph, telephone, news desks and news papers –Received a congressional medal of honor

12 Amelia Earhart –1928 first woman to fly across the Atlantic as a passenger –1932 first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic –1937 tried to fly around the world went from California across the US, through African and Asia. –Disappears in the Pacific Ocean

13 Hero’s con’t Sports became a big business in 1920’s –Boxing match between Jack Dempsey (US) and George Carpentier (FR) brought in $1 million in ticket sales Dempsey won and became Heavyweight champion of the world and American hero

14 Jim Thorpe –Pro football and baseball player –Olympic gold in decathlon and pentathlon –First president of NFL George Herman “Babe” Ruth –Hit 714 home runs a record unbroken for nearly 40 years

15 Hazel Wightman- Olympics Helen Wills- Wimbledon Gertrude Ederle- Gold and 2 bronze in 1924 Olympics swimming –“product of modern times” –First woman to swim the English Channel- beat the men’s record by 2 hours More American participated in amateur sports –Golf, swimming, tennis
