3 Nice, French Riviera Nice(尼斯), a city on the Mediterranean Sea, is a popular resort town known for its elegant hotels, wide avenues, and picturesque villas with gardens. Many people visit Nice during the winter, as the nearby Alps shelter the area from cold northern winds, giving it a mild climate year round.

4 Mediterranean sea Surrounded by southern Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia, the Mediterranean Sea covers about 2,510,000 sq km (about 969,000 sq mi). Some of the world earliest civilizations began along the shores of the Mediterranean, and it has served as a vital trade route for thousands of years.

5 Mediterranean sea Mediterranean Sea, inland sea of Europe, Asia, and Africa, linked to the Atlantic Ocean at its western end by the Strait of Gibraltar. Known to the Romans as Mare Nostrum (our sea), the Mediterranean is almost landlocked.

6 Mediterranean sea The Mediterranean is a remnant of the vast ancient sea called Tethys(古地中海,特提斯海), which was squeezed almost shut in the Oligocene Epoch(渐新世纪, 地质时代中古近纪的最后一个主要分期,大约开始于3400万年前, 终于2300万年前 ), 30 million years ago, when the crustal plates (地壳板块)carrying Africa and Eurasia collided.
