Francesco Redi:
Born Feb. 1626, Arezzo, Italy
Died March 1697, Pisa
Italian physician and poet.
Acquired a degree in medicine and philosophy from the University of Pisa.
One of the first to disprove spontaneous generation.
Maggots in meat came from flies’ eggs.

The sudden appearance of some organisms.
Life naturally developed from non-living matter.
Example:
Maggots arose from meat.
Mice from the grain.

Lazzaro Spallanzani, an Italian scientist:
Boiling kills any living organisms.
Consequently, there were no living organisms give rise to new ones.
Louis Pasteur, a French scientiste:
The microorganisms reproduce and give rise to many others like themselves.
Theory:
Life did not arise from nonlife.
