2 Introduction Francesco Redi: Italian physician and poet.
Aysha Introduction Francesco Redi: Born Feb. 1626, Arezzo, Italy Died March 1697, Pisa Italian physician and poet. Acquired a degree in medicine and philosophy from the University of Pisa. One of the first to disprove spontaneous generation. Maggots in meat came from flies’ eggs.

3 The Problem : Spontaneous generation
Marwa The Problem : Spontaneous generation Meaning: The sudden appearance of some organisms. Life naturally developed from non-living matter. Example: Maggots arose from meat. Mice from the grain. Video:

4 The Problem : Redi’s Hypothesis
Aysha The Problem : Redi’s Hypothesis Hypothesis: New organisms produced only by existing organisms. Redi’s question: Where do maggots come from?

5 Redi’s Experiment Observed: Noticed and described:
Marwa Redi’s Experiment Observed: Maggots appear where flies had previously landed. Flies coming from maggots. Noticed and described: The different developmental forms of flies. Proposed a new hypothesis: Maggots came from eggs that flies laid on meat. Experiment: Putting meat into three separate jars.

6 Redi’s Experiment Step 1 Jar-1 Left open Maggots developed Aysha

7 Redi’s Experiment Step 2 Jar-2 Covered with netting
Aysha Redi’s Experiment Step 2 Jar-2 Covered with netting Maggots appeared on the netting

8 Redi’s Experiment Step 3 Jar-3 Sealed No maggots developed Aysha

9 Analysis and Theory The experiments shows: Other scientist: Theory:
Marwa Analysis and Theory The experiments shows: Maggots and flies arise from living parents. Other scientist: John Needham, from England: Life had been created from nonlife. Lazzaro Spallanzani, an Italian scientist: Boiling kills any living organisms. Consequently, there were no living organisms give rise to new ones. Louis Pasteur, a French scientiste: The microorganisms reproduce and give rise to many others like themselves. Theory: Life did not arise from nonlife.

10 Spallanzani and Pasteur Experiments:
Marwa Spallanzani and Pasteur Experiments:

11 Effect of Discovery At Redi’s time: Years later:
Aysha Effect of Discovery At Redi’s time: people didn’t believe in his experiment. Years later: Pasteur insured that spontaneous generation was totally wrong by his experiment. The significance of the discovery: That there is no organism come from non-life organism -
