5 *Objectives* -The students, given proper instruction, will visually and auditory recognize the differences in social class in society -The students will come up with their own ideas on how to solve social inequality -Students will demonstrate tolerance for citizens of other socioeconomic status

12 Activities What will students actually do to learn?

13 Family Budgets  Students form into groups of two.  Each receives a list of bills to pay and pay for employment.  Several different budgets, some more some less.  Students interact to pay bills and receive wages from each other.  Show how misunderstanding is created

14 Poverty Stereotypes  View video “Shelter- boy” Shelter- boyShelter- boy  Discuss stereotypes of homeless people  Discuss causes of homelessness

15 The Great Depression  View video on the Great Depression  Discuss how people became impoverished  Discuss our own possible choices in that situation

16 On Site Visit  Visit a homeless shelter or urban slum or rural Appalachian- type settlement  Students must write a paper detailing what they have seen and their reaction to it

17 The Status Game  Each student is randomly selected into one of five statuses high to low  Students play a modified Monopoly game where the rules are different for each group

19 Class in Medieval Period  Class was divided into 3 categories –Nobility: those who fight –Clergy: those who pray –Peasants: those who work  What status would you have if you had lived back then?

20 Industrial Revolution  Class was broken into two categories –Capitalists (bourgeoisie): the owners –Proletariat: the workers  Who named the two classes and thought they would always have conflict?

21 Modern Era  Social status and economic status are two variables in finding socio-economic status

22 Social Status  Based on your … –Social capital –Habits –Values –Education

23 Economics 101  Status is divided into five categories by yearly earnings –Poor –Working –Middle –Upper Middle –Wealthy

24 Mobility  Socio-Economic status is changeable –What your parents are only tells you what your status starts as. You can raise your level if you want to.
