Global Health at the McGill Library Supporting Interdisciplinary Programs in Academic Institutions Supporting Interdisciplinary Programs Resource Guide Workshops Conference Presentations Promotion Collaboration Of Academic Community Collaboration Of Librarians The creation of a comprehensive resource guide started with collaboration between liaison librarians for interdisciplinary content, and quickly grew to include instruction, a wiki, promotion, and collaboration within the McGill community, and beyond. Librarian Collaboration Liaison Librarians from across the McGill Library - Life Sciences, Law, Environmental Sciences, and Government Publications - collaborate to create the web-based guide and convert it into a wiki. Workshops A hands-on workshop is developed to train users in the diversity of sources and tools useful for global health information and research, to support capacity building, and to introduce the collaborative guide. Conference Presentations The collaborative guide has been presented at two interdisciplinary conferences, Beyond Borders 2007 and WikiSym 2007. Promotion The Global Health Resource Guide is introduced to the McGill community and academic communities nationally and internationally using listservs, conference presentations, publications, and posters. Use is significantly increased. Community Collaboration The McGill community, and beyond, are encouraged to use and add resources and information to the wiki, using a McGill or guest login. Small but significant contributions are received from beyond the original group of collaborators. Conclusions Interest has been enthusiastic, with diverse groups showing interest in both content and Web 2.0 technology. The process indicated a lack of bibliographic control and revealed a number of valuable sources that were not well known Discussion Interdisciplinary collaboration has been a positive learning experience. Global health studies provided the Library with an opportunity to support the Universitys increased emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration. The presentations, subject guide, wiki, and workshop demonstrated the knowledge of librarians and the ability of the Library to support global health studies, an important, growing area of study and research at McGill University, and a model to support other interdisciplinary areas. Future Plans 1. Evaluation of use of the guide 2. Offering the workshop to broader audiences, including via online tutorials 3.
