SUMMER INTERNSHIP IN MEDICINE CONCEPT: Rural immersion experience occurring during vacation period between year 1 & 2 of med school Encourage student involvement in community, health system, clinical medicine and interprofessional experiences Hospital provided stipend and leadership to maximize experience Preferred utilization of small rural communities to provide a formative learning base for clinical years

SUMMER INTERNSHIP IN MEDICINE PROGRAM: Elective experience, two to eight week internships (two weeks minimum) Small to medium hospitals involved, many with local (hometown) students participating Experiences could include (but are not restricted to): routine office visits, ER, delivery room, surgery, pharmacy, home care, public health nursing, law enforcement, dentistry, chiropractic, laboratory, medical records, x-ray/radiology, social services, morticians, veterinarians, hospice, pathology, anesthesiology, PAs, NPs, PharmDs, administration, staff or medical director meetings, ambulance services, etc.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP IN MEDICINE FUTURE: We feel this program is helpful in the formulation of clinical confidence and reinforcing rural practice choice as well as providing an opportunity for future recruitment Further information in February with application process competed in April for Summer 2008
