The country Situated on the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria covers an area of approximately 110,000 square kilometers and shares its borders with Romania to the Nort, Greece and Turkey to the South/South East and former Yugoslav states Macedonia and Serbia to the West. To the East, Bulgaria is flanked by the Black Sea: 380 km of coastline offering everything from rugged secluded beaches to fully developed, highly commercialised resorts, one of its biggest assets as far as summer tourism is concerned.

The religion The Christian religion infiltrated the population of Bulgarian Slavs as early as the 6 th and 7 th centuries. After the adoption of the Christian faith by Prince Boris 1 (865), Christianity became the official religion of the Bulgarian State. continuous process of Christian influence gradually engulfed the Bulgars, too (7 th – 9 th century).

The traditions

Holidays Bulgaria love to celebrate and their calendar is full of traditional and other festivals. The extent to which some of the more traditional holidays are celebrated may vary from region to region and the folklore traditions are more prevalent in rural Bulgaria than the larger towns.

Folklore costumes Traditional folk costumes were hand-made using natural materials. Wool, linen, cotton and silk usually hand spun and woven. In the past women would stay at home and produce the colorful costumes mainly for their own pleasure.

Traditional music Bulgarians are proud of their national music and dance tradition, justifiably, as this music is highly developed artistically, and is greatly respected worldwide in the folk- music community. Moreover it is a real living tradition; as well as big concerts by the top performers, it is a way in which ordinary Bulgarians enjoy life.

Herbs and home remedies Don’t be surprised if you hear a Bulgarian suggesting that “pigs fat rubbed into your nose will stop a running nose” or “ rubbing your body down with rakia (the local schnapps) will reduce a temperature”. These are just some of the gems from Bulgarian traditional remedies that have been handed down from generation to generation.

What to eat The Bulgarian kitchen is so variable. Most of the foreigners try from the Bulgarian kitchen banitza, shopska salad, tarator, surmi and kavarma.

What to drink Bulgaria is one of Europe’s top wine producers but the local alcohol drink is rakia. If non-alcohol is your choice then there are also excellent mineral waters.

The language The biggest barrier of all visitors of Bulgaria is the language, and the Cyrillic alphabet in particular.

Nature There are no words to explain the nature of Bulgaria.
