Pinch Pot- A method of forming pottery using a ball of clay and your fingers

Pinch Pot Birds and Pinch Pot Fish Greenware- Clay that has NOT been fired

Bisque- The firing done without glaze, or clay after it has been fired once

Coil- The method which uses long snake like structures to form a pot

Slab- A method of building which requires several flat pieces

Scoring- Roughing up the clay to attach another piece

Slip- Liquid clay that has the consistency of mayonnaise

Wedging- The process of throwing the clay to release all the air pockets

Kiln- The oven like structure which heats at extremely high temperatures

Glaze- Chemicals which when heated to the proper temperature form glass

Functional Something that has purpose, and can be used to do something

Non- Functional Something that does not have a purpose; for example a sculpture that is just meant to be looked at, but does not have a function

How the project will be GRADED … Ceramics Whistles Product (Contents): Create 1 FUNCTIONAL whistle…it must make a noise on it’s own 3 sketch ideas in journal before you begin! Decorate the whistle using at least two different textures/patters/designs Whistle can be realistic or abstract Whistle must be painted with color using glaze or acrylic paints Must have at least one added extremity, that was attached after the initial whistle was built

Process (Craftsmanship): Final whistle must be a clean functional ceramic sculpture Final whistle should demonstrate the knowledge of basic ceramic skills and use of tools Designs and Textures must be well thought out and clean and clear

Studio time: Stayed on task Clean up!!! You will not leave to wash your hands until the whole room is cleaned Worked continuously throughout the class period Make up any missed days: That means excused or unexcused, 3 tardies = 1 absence
