1 HOLIDAY FOOD TRADITIONS Guo Hua Middle School – November 28, 2012

2 ‘Tis the Season The holiday season begins almost as soon as Halloween is over. The Holiday Season traditionally includes Thanksgiving and Christmas.

3 Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is a very special day for families. Students have Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off from school.

4 Wednesday: The Day Before The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is very busy! That day, families begin cooking their Thanksgiving dinners.

5 Wednesday: Giving There are many people who do not have enough food to eat on Thanksgiving. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is also a big day for donating food to churches and homeless shelters.

6 Thursday: Thanksgiving Day On Thanksgiving morning, families watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on TV. Often, families will begin cooking the turkey while they watch the parade. Parade: Macy's Thanksgiving Day ParadeMacy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

7 Thursday: Giving Thanks Most families eat dinner in the afternoon. Before eating, families usually take turns telling each other what they are thankful for. Charlie Brown - Saying Thanks (12:20)

8 Thursday: The Food! Each family has its own Thanksgiving food traditions, but almost everyone has the following on their Thanksgiving menu:

9 Turkey

10 Stuffing

11 Mashed Potatoes

12 Green Bean Casserole

13 Cranberry Sauce

14 Pumpkin Pie

15 Thursday: Thanksgiving Day After dinner, families will play and watch football.

16 The Christmas Season Begins! After Thanksgiving, the Christmas season begins!

17 The Christmas Season Many department stores begin decorating for the holidays, playing Christmas music, and offering big sales.

18 Christmas Traditions During the Christmas season, people.. (1) Listen to Christmas music, (2) decorate their homes, (3) and bake lots of Christmas cookies!

20 Teacher Laura’s Family Traditions Every family has its own Christmas food traditions. These are Teacher Laura’s family traditions:

21 Christmas Eve Traditions My family makes pierogies for Christmas Eve dinner.

22 Christmas Eve Dessert In addition to Christmas cookies, my family also makes a type of Polish cookie called “angel wings.”

23 The Next Day: Christmas Day!

24 Christmas Morning Food In the morning, families open presents. They also eat breakfast food, such as cinnamon rolls.

25 Christmas Dinner Most families eat ham, mashed potatoes, and vegetables for Christmas dinner. For dessert, families eat more Christmas cookies or pie.

26 It’s your turn! Pick a holiday. Any holiday! Write a holiday menu. It can be breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a snack! Write about how you make the dishes. Draw pictures.
