Deference Deference vs. Rudeness Limiting my freedom so I do not offend the tastes of those around me.

Deference Deference: Act of deferring: courteous or complaisant regard for another’s wishes. Submission to another idea, consideration. Respect for one another’s thoughts, ideas, and ways, and giving regard to them.

A person that grows up thinking that he is always right will more than likely die thinking the same. It is common respect to defer to another even if you do know all the answers. This builds strength and respect one to another, exhorts and builds more character in the person you deferred to, and builds trust between the individuals practicing this character.

Deference can bring a whole different attitude in the home and workplace. Letting someone else share their wishes and ideas in the home and workplace can provide a freshness and new energy to the environment. Attitude makes the difference in how we see things. Submitting to another persons ideas with a bad attitude is not deference, it is still rude.

Deference is a character quality for a leader. Leaders can see the qualities in others and defer to them. Employers can respect the wishes of others that are learning the trade. They see the good in others, and they see the gifts in others and are willing to empower that person WITHOUT JEALOUSY.

Story Tim went to work on Monday morning and got there five minutes before the office opened. He then complained about the others that were getting there three to four minutes late. He then noticed that the other desks were filthy from the night before. When his boss came to greet him for the day, Tim noticed that no one else acknowledged the boss and thought it to be disrespectful. He worked right through lunch and thought that all the rest of the workers should follow his ethics. At the end of the day, he was upset because things did not go his way. He stayed late to help clean up after everyone else who was to busy to clean up their mess. He murmured as he left saying,”I work with a bunch of disorganized lazy people.”

Dan worked at the same place as Tim and got there right as the doors were opening. He noticed all the people coming towards the door after the clock rang for work so he quickly handed them their time card to hurry up the process and exhort them to get to work. As Dan walked towards his desk, he noticed all the messy desks and smiled at the thought that they were blessed with so much work that they couldn’t handle it all. He felt for his fellow workers because they didn’t have time to clean up every day because they had to finish up the cases the next day. Thus the records were left out to work on. When the boss came through to greet them all Dan was blessed to see that he was part of the team and trusted everyone to do their part. At lunch, he sat with his fellow workers to enjoy their fellowship and thought that it was so nice to be able to feel like a family all working together. As he left work that day he noticed the mess, but smiled knowing the work that everyone had accomplished that day. He picked up his area, and walked pass the boss thanking him for the job and went home with a smile.

Moral of story The boss was looking for a man to defer to, that would help him get the workplace organized and could work with the people to keep the attitude of the workplace doing well. Neither man knew that that the boss was looking for someone. Who would the boss respect? Who would the boss trust? Who would the boss pick to take his freedom with the workers for the betterment of the company? Discuss briefly.

Rudeness: Lacking delicacy or refinement, uncouth, uncivil. Getting down to brass tacks is a good way to produce a puncture. People who say what they think wouldn’t be so bad if they thought. The reason it’s called free speech, is because most of it isn’t worth anything.

Language that offends Do you know why Noah almost didn’t let the chickens on the ark? Because they had foul language

Examples When transcripts of the famous Watergate tapes were released, Americans were stunned to read of the unrestrained filthiness of language used by President Nixon and his associates. Nixon’s every sentence seemed soiled with both profanities and obscenities of the rawest kind. It seems all the more ironic, then, to watch videotapes of the televised campaign debate between Nixon and John F Kennedy on Oct 13, 1960, when Nixon sanctimoniously criticized the crusty language of Harry Truman.

Nixon said: “IT make you realize that whoever is President is going to be a man that all the children of America will either look up to or will look down to. I can only say that I am proud that President Eisenhower restored dignity and decency and, frankly, good language to the conduct of the Presidency of the United States. And I only hope if I win this lection, that I could see to it that whenever any mother of father talks to their child, he can look at the man in the Whitehouse and say: “Well there is a man that maintains the kind of standards personally that I would like my child to follow.” Deference is changing our ways to not offend the ones around us by our actions that are indecent and unkind. What did Nixon do wrong?

Being Courteous Be nice and courteous on your way up in life because you will be meeting them again on your way down. Being courteous costs you nothing, yet it buys things that are priceless. Deferring to another persons ideas and wishes is just an act of being courteous, kind, and respectful.

Why would someone not practice deference? 1) They think they know it all. 2) They are jealous of someone else’s ideas. 3) They may not respect the other person. 4) They know their in the wrong and to proud to admit it. 5) They are set in their ways.

Why would a person practice deference? 1) To respect their fellow worker or family member. 2) To gain new ideas and knowledge through someone else’s ideas. 3) To build a team that can work together and learn new things. 4) Because it is kind and polite. 5) Because if you don’t use their ideas, someone else might.

Group What ideas do you have that you have not been able to implement at home or in the work place? What ideas has someone else had that you didn’t listen to? (good or bad)
