2 IT leaders aren't giving themselves a free pass on the critical business technology tests of today. Most don't think they're doing a great job of providing the analytics and innovation marketing needs to get better insights into customer needs, for example. But most IT leaders also see the influence of the CIO growing, especially when it comes to charting company strategy in the digital business era. In our InformationWeek 2014 Strategic CIO Survey, we asked 155 IT executives for their views about their IT organizations, the role of the CIO, and their innovation priorities around technology. Some findings: >> Among innovation priorities, cost-cutting took a notable jump, up nine points to 48%, making it the most-cited priority by a large margin. The next two innovation priorities are more revenue-focused: introducing a new IT-led product for customers (33%) and creating a new business model or revenue stream (30%), though those are little changed from a year ago. >> Improving customer service is the other big mover among innovation priorities, jumping 10 points to 27%. Improving web operations/customer experience rose nine points to 23%. >> The biggest concern among IT leaders in our survey is the ability for IT to execute fast enough. The lowest priority: having good relationships with other business unit leaders. >> IT spending is trending upward, with 59% of the companies in our survey expecting to increase their IT budgets this year and just 16% looking to cut them. Our survey was limited to CIOs, CTOs, executive VPs, senior VPs, and VPs of IT at companies of more than 100 employees. Half of respondents are from companies with $500 million or more in annual revenue, and 16% are from companies with less than $50 million in revenue. Want more?
