Welcome Fourth Meeting of the Advisory Committee CAS Physics in Physics of Nano-Materials and Complex Systems 18 th March 2011

The Third Advisory Committee met on 24th March 2010. The minutes were circulated to all members No comments received.

Financial Sanctions Non Recurring Equipment Grant of Rs. 54.50 Lakhs Major Equipments Low Temp Cryostat (8 ), RF Sputtering upgradation (10), Impedance Analyzer (10) plus other smaller equipments. All are working and being used. Presentations to be given by concerned colleagues. Recurring for 5 years 28.50 lakhs plus 3 project Fellows (Main highlight here is Website development for course material… to be presented by AKK )

Three Project Fellows working. Two of these are registered Ph D students. Third is expected to register in the next year. The progress of their work is included in the report. Earlier Project Fellows completed their doctoral work. Some appointed fellows were Postdocs and they have got a regular PDF (either here or elsewhere)

The support received from UGC by the virtue of being CAS Department A.Infrastructure grant of Rs 30 lakhs during 2009-10. All had been utilized and UC was sent in May/June 2010. Next installment of Rs 30 lakhs for next year 2010-11 has not been released YET. Even though some expenditure has been incurred. B. 10 UGC Research Fellowships for Meritorious students for CAS Departments in 2007-08 and another 5 in 2008-09 were sanctioned. All the 15 have been continued in 2009-10. Selection Committee with external members was constituted by VC

As a sequel to 3 rd India-Singapore Joint Physics Symposium (ISJPS-2010) 19-21 Feb 2010 organized by School of Physics (under CAS), the next (4 th ISJPS) was organized by NUS in Singapore during 23-25 Feb 2011. Six colleagues from SoP Univ Hyd (in addition to several others from elsewhere in India) participated and delivered talks. Our research collaboration with NUS colleagues is expected to be strengthened further. The next in this series is scheduled to be held at IIT Delhi during Feb 2012.

Academic : Prof S. N. Kaul was awarded the prestigious Sir J. C. Bose Fellowship by the DST, New Delhi. He was also awarded the Dr Biren Roy Memorial Lecture (2010) by the INSA Prof V. Seshu Bai was elected as a Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences. Dr. Surajit Dhara was awarded the Michi- Nakata prize (2010) by the International Liquid Crystal Society

Publications: over 100 publications during last one year (including those submitted and in press) in refereed Journals and about 50 in conference proceedings. Fellows of all the three Indian Academies Institute of Physics London (UK) DST PAC members ( Materials Science and Cond Matter Phys, Laser and Atomic Physics ) and other expert committees of DST Memberships of International Committees of Prestigious International Conferences and other bodies

Faculty Visits to Well Known Centers of Research Cambridge, Trento, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Germany, Saskatchewan(Canada), National University of Singapore, St Petersburg Polytechnic University, Freie University Berlin etc and MANY MORE… Some Students also visited, ICTP, Padova, Trento, Krakow etc for research work and conferences. Some of the theses have been offered to be published by Academic publishers in book form: D Jaysree (VSSS), K Sudheendran (KCJR) and N Srinivasa Rao (APP)

Major Inputs (Incentives) required to Excel Further Convert Project Fellows to PDF/RA >International Travel : Major International Conf. At least once in two years, For 31 Faculty it works out to be about 15 lakhs per year. >Maintenance money for the equipments bought ….. about 5 lakhs per year >The novel programme of Website development More inputs to sustain it, About 2.5 lakhs p a Consumables ->to about 3 lakhs/pa for Helium Plus some other minor additions listed in the report.
