Public Opinion The Vietnam War divided public opinion. Two thoughts:
The war was needed to stop the spread of Communism. The war was a Civil War that should be settled by the Vietnamese themselves.

Division in the Government
Division in thought was also apparent in the government. Leaders in the government sided with the Hawks or Doves. Hawks – supported the war Doves – wanted the war to end

American Casualties As the number of American casualties climbed into the thousands, more and more people began to oppose the war. Why?

Protests at Home All over the United States, protests and marches against the war were held.

Draft Some young Americans were angry about being drafted.
They burned their draft cards in protest. Some moved to Canada to avoid the draft.

President Johnson The problems of the war made President Johnson decide not to run for re-election in 1968.
