Born in Boston, Mass. as a free African American Grew up in a mostly European American town and identified himself as “mulatto” Freely attended schools with whites and was supported in his studies by his white teachers. Educated at Fisk and Harvard University and received a PhD Initially supported Booker T. “The problem of the 20 th century will be the color line.” Demanded immediate equality. Advocated the “Talented Tenth” a term he coined that described the likelihood of one in 10 black men becoming leaders of their race.
