Nerves EQ: How do the basic structures of the nervous system function?
3
Nervous System Controls and coordinates all the essential functions of the body Receives and relays info about the activities within the body Reacts to internal and external change
4
Neuron Specialized to carry messages throughout the body There are 3 types of neurons –Sensory neurons: carry information from the sense organs –Motor neurons: carry information from the brain to the muscles or glands –Interneurons: connect sensory and motor neurons
6
Parts of a Neuron Synapse: space between two neurons filled with neurotransmitters to conduct nerve impulses Cell Body: performs the normal functions of the cell Dendrites: capture nerve impulses and directs them to the cell body Axon: carries nerve impulses away from the cell body Axon Terminals: end point – sends impulse to the next neuron in the path Myelin Sheath: insulates the cell – keeps the nerve impulse with in the axon
9
Threshold Messages are sent through the nervous system as electrical impulses These impulses can only move in one direction A minimum level of stimulation is required for the impulse to begin its journey: called the threshold –Below the threshold no sensation will be felt and no action taken –Above the threshold the strength of the impulse is always the same
