Outline Introduction Wireless Protocol Options Chip and Development Kit Selection Firmware Options Budget Overview Next Semester Plans

Who is Phonon Developers and manufactures of Surface Acoustic Waves components and modules for defense and space. Quality checks from various sensors during manufacturing process.

Phonon’s Issue and Our Solution Issue: Sensor data is isolated due to the constraints of their production room Solution: Create a wireless communication system between the sensors and an outside node

Solution Our Wireless Communication System will require: A Wireless Communication Protocol Wireless Transceiver and MCU Protocol Stack GUI PCB

Specifications Wireless range should reach at least 50 ft. Low power – should be able to run off a single battery. Small bandwidth usage. Size must be minimal. Complies with IEEE standards.

Protocols StandardWi-FiBluetoothZigBee IEEE Spec... 802.11a/b/g802.15.1802.15.3a Frequency Band 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz; 5 GHz Max Signal Rate 54 Mb/s1 Mb/s250 kb/s Nominal Range 100 m10 m10 - 100m Channel Bandwidth 22 MHz1 MHz0.3/0.6 MHz, 2MHz

Hardware What we need from our chip: Single Chip Solution Operates at 2.4 GHz Low power consumption Zigbee and Z-Stack Mesh compatible Adequate amount of pins

Firmware Our microcontroller will be utilizing Z-Stack Mesh software to communicate. Z-Stack is provided by Texas Instruments for free and is IEEE 802.15.4 compliant. This software will allow us to easily transfer and receive data from multiple sensors without giving up on speed or reliability. Visual Basic to create graphical user interface for data

What is a mesh? A mesh is a network topology where every node can be a router for its neighbors. Every node can relay data within the network, being either a source or destination for application layer communication Ideal because we have multiple sensors transmitting data to our transceiver

ZigBee Mesh configuration Coordinator Router End Device Router End Device

Z-Stack Mesh Zigbee Pro certified protocol stack Provides a library of functions to use in C for our wireless communication Capable of connecting over 400 nodes Many-to-many, many-one application routing
