2. Fact and Opinion Writers of nonfiction texts sometimes include their own opinion. –Remember: A fact is something that can be proved. An opinion is a statement of feeling or belief.

3. Would these statements be facts or opinions? My favorite food is pizza. Going to the beach makes the best vacation! Math is the most interesting subject. Barak Obama is the U.S. President. I love to eat at Burger King! The Bulldogs won the game last night. “Whoever cooked this meal is a GREAT cook!”

4. Turn in your Reading Practice Book to page 114. STATEMENTFACT OR OPINION EVIDENCE I think that Alexander Calder is the best artist who ever lived. They are made of metal and have names like “Flying Dragon” and “Flamingo.”

5. Theme A story’s Theme is its most important message, or moral. All the elements in a story work together to reveal the theme. Theme can be stated directly or indirectly. To figure out an unstated theme, think about what the main character learns or does.

6. Turn in your Reading Practice Book to page 115. Who are the main characters? What is the setting? What are the important Plot Events? What does the main character learn?

7. Intentions are ideas about what a person means to do. What do you think it means to have good intentions?

8. If you do something inadvertently, you do it without meaning to. What is something a person might do inadvertently?

9. Theme test 4 Help Us Create a Butterfly Garden I will hand out your testing materials. You will receive a testing booklet and a answer document. Do NOT start until I give you the directions to begin. Once we begin you will have 25 minutes to complete this portion of the test. When 25 minutes has passed, I will give you and additional 5 minutes to complete the test. If you finish before the time is up STOP. Do NOT complete any other portion of this test. STOP after number 6.

10. Following Written Directions Written directions usually tell how to make or do something. Carefully READ all the steps first! Ask questions about anything unclear. Gather all the materials you will need. Follow the steps in order.

11. Turn in your Reading Practice Book to page 116. What should you do before you start to follow the directions? What should you do after folding the paper back and forth? Why should you do step 3 before step 5? What will happen if you cut the whole fold?

12. Theme Read along with me… On a hot summer day, a fox was strolling through an orchard until he came across some grapes. “Just the thing for my hunger,” Fox thought. He got a running start and he leapt up to grab the grapes with his teeth, but he missed them. Again and again, the fox tried these running jumps. He leapt as high as he possibly could. But at last, he walked away with his nose in the air saying, I am sure they were sour grapes anyway.”

13. Theme & Narrative Form Why do you think Fox says the grapes are sour? What is the Theme of the story? What kind of narrative form is this story?

14. Something magnificent is very beautiful and impressive. What view would be more magnificent, the view from under your bed or the view from the top of a mountain?

15. Someone who is distressed feels very sad and helpless. Would you expect someone who is feeling distressed to whistle a cheerful song? Why or why not?

16. trampled If you trampled something, you stepped on it very hard and damaged it. What might you use to trample something?

17. Ominous A sign of trouble or a warning that something bad is about to happen. Why might smoke be an omnious sight?

18. Confound To surprise or confuse someone. What kind of question might confound you?

19. MISERABLE To feel uncomfortable or unhappy. How might a cold make you feel miserable?
