What is Work-Based Learning? (WBL) Gives students opportunities to: Earn on-the-job training Connect related course with workplace skills Earn income while earning elective credit Gain employability skills

WBL Categories 1. Apprenticeship – Completed 1 related unit of credit and employed in high-salary position Requires a post-secondary commitment related to student’s career interest and placement. Tracked beyond high school graduation by WBL Coordinator Student works more hours after high school graduation

WBL Categories 2. Internship – Enables students to connect career interest to academic and occupation learning with business Completed 1 related unit of credit in career area of interest Job placement in that career area Paid or unpaid position

WBL Categories 3. Cooperative Education (Co-op)- Enrolled in a career related course linked to career pathway Learning employability skills in a paid position Placement does not relate to desired career interest

WBL Categories 4. Employability Skill Development Have completed or are concurrently enrolled in a career related course to learn employability skills but not working in career-related job. Paid position.

Attendance Policy CCSD Attendance policy applies Students sign out/in daily before leaving If absent from school, student cannot report to the job site except by special permission Discuss with WBL Coordinator by phone Strongly encouraged to schedule doctor appointments outside your work hours

How Are Students Graded?

How are Students Graded: Employer evaluations (20%) Portfolio and Facilitator evaluation (40%) Documentation of work hours (40%) See course syllabus handout

Employer Evaluation (20%) Consists Of: Evaluated by his/her employer twice per semester First semester: September & December Second semester: February & May Evaluated on work ethic The score the employer returns on form is put in gradebook

Facilitator Evaluation (40%) Consists Of: Required signed documents Weekly completion of work schedule Attendance at meetings and sessions with Career Pathway Facilitator Email and teacher website monitoring Assignments, Projects, and Final Exam

Portfolio Evaluation (40%) Consists Of: Students will maintain a WBL notebook Consists of employability assignments with rubrics Monthly journal topics Facilitator Evaluations and Portfolio are combined to equal a total of 40%

Documented Time Worked (40%) Evaluation Consists Of: Completion of monthly timesheets Paid: Turn in copies of paycheck stubs Unpaid: Mentor’s signature on timesheet

Required Hours Varies according to the number of work-based learning period(s): WBL Period(s)Minimum Hours Per Week 315 210 15 Majority of your hours MUST be worked during the work week. See Page 10-11

WBL Program Guidelines Overall 2.5 GPA On track for graduation Sites must be store front or office, not a residence Approved worksites ONLY Business phone line, registered name, tax id number TIN Family businesses not encouraged, no family members can directly supervise or mentor student Employed by day 10 of school and remain the entire semester DO NOT QUIT without permission from WBL Coordinator Keep WBL Coordinator informed of issues on the job

WBL Program Guidelines Con’t Any student who quits, is fired/terminated will receive a failing grade The employer may require students to work during holidays Call or email WBL Coordinator by 9:00 a.m. if absent from school Missing two or more classes in a school day and student cannot report to work or hours won’t count If student is in ISS, he/she may not leave school early for work and can’t report to work that same day Medical internships must follow internship requirements

WBL Guidelines Con’t Students must leave campus upon their release period(s) Students should inform employers of any modified schedule due to testing or change of events Students must maintain employment until the end of the semester to receive WBL credit or will not receive WBL credit for the semester Student will turn in copies of timesheets and paystubs at the end of each month to document wages earned Student will respond to requests for information relative to education and career progress for up to two years

TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS IN ASPEN: 1. Log into Aspen 2. Select WBL class 3. Select Assignment 4. Upload Document-(it won’t load if document is open) 5. Confirmation-assignment file name is shown with a document icon

WBL Assignments Assignments are normally due on Wednesdays Late assignments cannot be uploaded to Aspen after due date so student must print and hand in to me If I am off campus making worksite visits, please leave assignments in slot outside of my office door, room 2229 If I am off campus when you come to visit me, please leave a message on my door (message center) Email me with questions or issues that arise
