2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Introduction to Part IV In Part IV, you hear ten talks spoken on the tape. There are three questions in your test book about each talk (a total of 30 questions). After each question, four answer choices are written out. You have to choose one answer choice—(A), (B), (C), or (D)—that best answers the question according to the information that you hear in the talk.

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Introduction to Part IV Before each talk, one of the speakers gives an introduction. Here are some examples of introductions for the talks: “Questions 80 to 83 are based on the following announcement.” “Questions 80 to 83 are based on the following speech.” After each talk, one of the speakers will tell you to answer a specific question: “Now find question 91 in your book and answer it.” There are eight seconds between each question. You do NOT have to wait for the speaker to give you these instructions before you read and answer the questions.

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Part IV: The Talks The talks are given by one speaker. Each talk is 20—90 seconds long. There are usually only three or four specific pieces of information in each talk. There are many different kinds of talks, but these are some of the most common types: Public Announcements These are short, spoken messages given to people in public places. For example, public announcements might be given on airplanes, trains, or buses, or at airports, bus or train stations. Public announcements might also be given at stores, sporting events, or attractions. (Talk I in the Preview Test is an example of a public announcement.)

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Part IV: The Talks News and Weather Reports These are news stories or weather reports that you might hear on television or radio. (Talk 2 in the Preview Test is an example of a weather bulletin.) Commercial Messages These are similar to the advertisements you hear on television or radio. Their purpose is to sell goods such as cars, soap, and shoes to the people who are listening. These messages also mention services such as house cleaning, computer repair, and legal advice. (Talk 3 in the Preview Test is an example of a commercial message.)

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Part IV: The Talks Business Announcements These talks are similar to introductions or remarks given at a meeting or in some other business situation. (Talk 4 in the Preview Test is an example of a business announcement.) Recorded Messages These are like the messages that you hear on the telephone when you call a number and it is not answered by a live person, but by a machine. (Talk 5 in the Preview Test is an example of a recorded message.)

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Part IV: The Questions There are two main types of questions: 1. Overview Questions These are general questions about the main idea or main purpose of the talk. Overview questions can also ask about the general situation (for example, Who is listening? Who is speaking?). 2. Detail and Negative Questions These are questions about specific points that are given in the talk. More information about both types of questions is given in the Testing Points and Exercises section of this lesson.

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Part IV: The Answer Choices All of the answer choices look like “good answers” to the question. In other words, it is difficult to guess the correct answer if you did not listen carefully to the talk first. Answer choices may be single words, phrases, or complete sentences.

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Tips for Part IV Listen carefully to the introduction to the talk. This gives you two important kinds of information: The type of talk it will be (recorded message, news bulletin, public announcement, etc.) The number of questions that the talk will cover Remember: If you hear the word and between the numbers in the introduction, there will only be two questions about that talk. (“Questions 92 and 93 are based on the following speech.”) If you hear the word to between the numbers, there will be more than two questions about that talk. (“Questions 80 to 83 are based on the following announcement.”) 2. Look at the questions as the speaker is giving the talk. Do not close your eyes or look away to focus on listening to the tape. You need to focus on BOTH the talk and the questions in your book at the same time.

2 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 15 Tips for Part IV The questions that are written out in your test book can help you listen for specific information. For example, if one of the questions is “When ...?“, you know you must listen for a time. Don’t mark your answer while the talk is being played on the tape. If you do, you might miss the information you need to answer the next question. Continue to listen until the talk is finished. Just as in Part III, incorrect answer choices in Part IV often have a word, a phrase, or an idea that you heard in the conversation. Don’t choose an answer choice only because it has words from the conversation.
