Connect! What are some desired traits that breeders might want to select for in these food sources? What would breeders need to know about each trait to produce the desired trait in offspring?

GENETIC APPLICATIONS Genetic technology will continue to impact every aspect of your life from growing the food you eat to treating a disease you might inherit. 1.Selective Breeding: For thousands of years new varieties of cultivated plants and domestic animals have resulted from selective breeding for particular traits

breeders choose plants and animals with the most desirable traits to serve as parents for the next generation selective breeding has produced nearly all domestic animals, including cats, dogs, and horses, as well as most crop plants

 For example, a dairy farmer might select and breed only the cows that are the most hardy and give the most milk, hoping to create a population with the desired characteristics

 Farmers selectively breed chickens to improve egg quality and number of eggs per hen

Other Selective Breeding Results…

Chunk! How do we get new varieties of crops and animals? Define selective breeding. Describe selective breeding of either cows or chickens. Explain the diagram at right.

Check It Out! Caption: Tugboat captains don’t get paid enough!
